Peninsula Preview

This particular blog could almost write itself. Standard operating procedure in the Peninsula District. Decide whether Hampton or Phoebus comes in first, then figure out the best of the rest. Those two schools have won 8 state championships in the last 20 years.

Tight Squeeze

If you were one of perhaps a 100 fans who got locked out of the regional basketball playoffs last year, you're just going to have to get there earlier this February. That's because the playoffs will once again return to Churchland High School. There had been discussions about moving to a larger venue. The Constant Center, Norfolk State, Hampton Convocation Center and Scope were considered. Apparently Churchland High is still the most

HS GameTime Top Ten

Our first top ten ranking of the high school football season is here. The 13NEWS Sports and HS GameTime staff will publish our top ten ranking weekly.

At number one, we start on the Peninsula with the reigning Division Five state champion Phoebus Phantoms. Once again, head coach Bill Dee has a solid nucleus of talent on both sides of the ball. Despite the departure of their two top running backs, Dennis Mathis and Haro

HS GameTime player of the week

It may have been a light schedule of games to usher in a new high school football season last Friday with all the action at the Beach but there were some outstanding individual efforts on the field, including one which stood out above the rest.

Our first HS GameTime player of the week honors goes to Ocean Lakes quarterback Marcus Davis, who threw three touchdowns and ran for two more in a convincing 41-9 opening night rout of Princess

Friday 8/24 wrap

Just a quick hitter on the first friday of the football season. Only the Beach District at work tonight. If opening night is any indication, Salem is going to be a force again. I was at that game. Kevin Whaley picked up where he left off and got some help from fellow running back Tyrek Boone. Xavier Boyce showed his talents off for Landstown, but the Sun Devils won 38-22.

Eastern District Football Preview

It may be time for a new season of high school football to begin, but it will more than likely be the same old story as far as the Eastern District is concerned. Expect Maury and Lake Taylor to finish 1-2 this upcoming football campaign.

The Commodores should pick up where they left off last season, a 9-3 mark including a 6-1 record in the district capped off by a stunning first round win over Pe

Southeastern Football Preview

Is it me or does Oscar Smith in recent years get better and better as each season passes? Head Coach Richard Morgan has in place a solid program in a district that used to be dominated by Deep Creek and Western Branch. The Tigers' main hurdle has been trying to get out of the East Region alive the past three seasons. They've been snake-bit by the Beach each year.

Beach Football Preview

Does it all start and end with the Salem Sun Devils? Maybe. They're coming off an undefeated regular season. Remember they won the Region final last year and lost their only game in the state semi-finals against Osbourne. They return Kevin Whaley who may just be the most exciting player in the area. He's a running back who is getting ready to break Southside rushing records.

HSGameTime!

WVEC is launching a major new project to cover high school sports called HSGameTime. It's sort of a mix of YouTube, MySpace, and ESPN with a distinctly local flavor.

The days of high school fans hoping the local media will take notice of their team are over! HSGameTime puts the schools in control. Now high schools have the opportunity to cover their s
