Beach Football Preview

Does it all start and end with the Salem Sun Devils? Maybe. They're coming off an undefeated regular season. Remember they won the Region final last year and lost their only game in the state semi-finals against Osbourne. They return Kevin Whaley who may just be the most exciting player in the area. He's a running back who is getting ready to break Southside rushing records.

The only question mark is can they replace their quarterback? Brian Robinson had some experience as a sophomore and returns to the gig as a senior. The Sun Devils are ranked #17 in the country by a national prep site. However, they may be challenged as perhaps the Beach has gotten better.
For sheer star power, there is Bayside. The Marlins have the #1 ranked quarterback in the region and one of the best in the country in E.J. Manuel. He's already chosen Florida State. He plays for a man Darnell Moore, who coached another one of the best high school quarterbacks I've even seen in Aaron Sparrow. If you can throw successfully you've got a chance to upset anybody any week.
We'll flip the other side of the coin for Kellam. The Knights love to run the ball. They run that wing-T offense and if they don't fall behind in a game they're usually in good shape. Even if coach told me they struggled in a scrimmage with Phoebus last week.
Landstown is not that far removed from the glory years and last season turned in a solid 8-2 record. They have one of the more dynamic players in the area in receiver Xavier Boyce who has committed to Virginia Tech. Question is can someone get him the ball. The Eagles open up with Salem, so hold onto your seats.
I might have liked Ocean Lakes a little more until they lost their starting quarterback to a knee injury. Marcus Davis is a highly touted wide receiver who will shift to QB. Tallwood is coming off an 8-3 and their first playoff appearance since 1998. They will count on some key transfers helping on offense. Their defense won games last year and appear to have what it takes to step up again.
I'm not going to down the whole list of others, but I will say maybe this is the year Green Run climbs back to respectability. They have a new coach, they have a new attitude and it helps that they got some transfers. Maybe they'll have their first winning season since the 90's.
