Friday Wrap 10/12

Seems to happen just about every week. We get a game that's pivotal in the district standings and it turns into a one-sided affair. It happened again on Friday night in the Peninsula District and the Bay Rivers District. First off, the annual Phoebus/Hampton showdown.

You can check out the extended hilites of the Crabbers and Phantoms and six other games in the video section on the HSgametime homepage. Everyone was talking about Hampton's defense coming into the game with Phoebus. Instead it was the Phantoms who shut the door. They held Hampton to 3 first downs all night. By the second half Phoebus running back Shawn Alston wore down the Crabbers with 133 yards on 33 carries. Phoebus remains unbeaten at 7-0 by shutting out Hampton 24-0.
The other game with major district implications was Lafayette at Grafton. The Rams did it with defense too. They remain undefeated by blanking Grafton 14-0. Rams QB Kurt Linkenauger threw for a touchdown and ran for the other score.
At the Beach we thought perhaps Kellam would give Salem a tough time. We had our cameras there in the first quarter and watched the Sun Devils score 3 touchdowns. Salem remains undefeated with a 28-7 win.
Check out the video for a David Wright sighting at his alma mater. We didn't have many other Hickory hilites as they lost to Western Branch 20-3.
By the time we got to the Landstown and Cox game the Eagles already had a 24-7 lead. Sterling Phifer made it even more convincing with a couple of long touchdowns in a 37-7 rout.
For me the hilite of the Indian River game was watching an animated head coach "Cadillac" Harris on the sidelines. He had reason to get excited as the Braves beat Deep Creek 20-14.
Back to the Bay Rivers District for our final set of hilites. Riding the momentum of a big come from behind win last week over Smithfield, the Islanders continued their roll this week. Poquoson won 47-10 over York.
