High school field hockey info

Lost in all the high school football talk, it is championship time for area field hockey. All the district tournaments are now complete as we approach regional play next week with the states on the horizon right here in our own backyard. First up, the much anticipated Beach tournament at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach. We were all penciling in perennial powers Princess Anne and Cox to meet for the district crown and qualify for the Eastern Region tournament, but leave it to Kellam to tilt the balance of power. On Thursday, the Lady Knights scored a mighty 1-0 upset of the regular season champion and top seed Lady Cavs in the semifinals scoring on a penalty stroke with just 1:35 left in regulation to score a stunning win, giving the district title match extra meaning. In the second semifinal, Cox showed why they are still a solid state contender as defending district, region and state champs. The Lady Falcons breezed past Ocean Lakes, 6-0, thanks to a three goal effort from Taylor Rhea to lead Cox back into the final. On Friday, Cox rolled past the Lady Knights, 3-0, to secure the second Beach District spot in region play, improving to 15-2, and gaining some payback after Kellam beat Cox two weeks ago.

In the Southeastern tournament, Lakeland showed why they are the class of their district. The Lady Cavaliers steamrolled past the competition, concluding with a 5-0 rout of Hickory in the final. Both Lakeland and Hickory qualify for the Eastern Region. In the Eastern District, it came down to Granby and Maury, the regular season winner. Lightning postponed the scheduled final from Wednesday to Thursday, where it would be decided in extra time, as the Comets scored an overtime game winner, 3-2, to win the district as both teams qualified for regionals. Finally, the Peninsula tournament, where there would be no tournament champion, due to the weather. Top seed Kecoughtan and Gloucester advance to the regionals, but could not play the final due to rain, plenty of rain, enough to declare the Lady Warriors and Lady Dukes co-district champs.
With all of that out of the way, here is the schedule for next week's Eastern Region tournament at the National Training Center. On Tuesday, October 30, Gloucester takes on lakeland while Princess Anne battles Granby, both games at 1pm. At 3pm, Kecoughtan plays Hickory and Cox contends with Maury. The semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, November at 1 and 3pm with the final Friday at 3pm. Of course, the semifinal winners advance to the state tournament the following week, also taking place at the National Training Center November 8-10. The Group AA and Group A tournaments also unfold at the training center.
