REGIONAL SEMI-FINALS

Perhaps our favorite hilite on this Friday was the coach of the defending state champions getting more than a little heated on the sidelines. He need not worry, his Phantoms are moving on. Two other undefeated teams advanced in Group AAA and then Indian River pulled off the one upset on the night.

State field hockey finals

Once again, the Cox Falcons field hockey team showed why they are heads and shoulders above the rest of the state of Virginia. The reigning state champions led from start to finish on Saturday as they completed yet another impressive postseason run with a 15th state crown.

PLAYOFF TIME

The second season is underway. No deserving teams got left home this year as the Eastern Region doubled the size of its playoff field. The expanded field means the playoffs started a week earlier than normal. It also means a State Champion will have to win five straight games.

State field hockey semifinals

A familiar face returns to the Group AAA state field hockey title game, while a district rival saw its title run derailed. The Cox Falcons are one win away from a 15th state championship in school history while Princess Anne saw its first half lead disappear against Northwest Region winner Stafford. And in a battle of Bay Rivers powers, Grafton punched its ticket to the Group A/AA championship game.

State Group AAA Field Hockey Quarterfinals

We can now say the Beach District does have the home field advantage when it comes to the State Field Hockey Tournament unfolding this week at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach. Both Cox and Princess Anne using the home field to their advantage in each of their quarterfinal matchups on Thursday.

State field hockey A/AA Quarterfinals

Finally, the state field hockey tournament in Virginia Beach is upon us. The week-long tournament began Tuesday afternoon with a pair of Group A/AA quarterfinal matchups at the National Training Center, one of them featuring a Bay Rivers field hockey power.

Playoff Picture

With the expanded playoffs this year there are twice as many teams celebrating now that we've reached the end of the regular season. Sixteen teams from Group AAA in the Eastern Region are in. Group AA goes another week before they settle the playoff issue.

Once again, the Cox Falcons are showing why they are the most dominant school in state prep field hockey history, a prime example unfolded in Friday's Eastern Region final against district rival Princess Anne.
