REGIONAL FINALS
They were our top two ranked teams from day one and they'll be the two schools representing the East Region in Group AAA. Oscar Smith and Phoebus have advanced to the state semi-finals.
Oscar Smith finally got over the hump in Division 6. This was the fourth straight year they made it to the region final. The last three years they lost to Beach schools, including last season when they fell to Salem. Same teams in a rematch this year. Salem jumped out to the early lead 9-0. However, Oscar Smith was able to contain all world running back Kevin Whaley from the Sun Devils.
The Tigers were having trouble running the ball themselves. So just before the half they passed their way down the field. A score just before half seemed to give them momentum for the rest of the game.
Sophomore Phillip Sims passed for his second touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter and Oscar Smith advanced with a 17-9 win.
Phoebus was hoping to hold off the giant killers from Indian River. The Braves pulled off upsets in the first two rounds of the playoffs. However, the Phantoms defense made sure nothing unusual would happen in the Division 5 region finals. They tossed their 5th shutout in 7 games.
Good balance for the Phantoms. Reid Evans caught 7 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Shawne Alston was the workhorse. He carried 34 times for 145 yards and 3 touchdowns. Phoebus won 26-0.
The Phantoms will have to go on the road for the State semi-final round. They travel to Stonebridge High School in Loudon County.
