State field hockey A/AA Quarterfinals

Finally, the state field hockey tournament in Virginia Beach is upon us. The week-long tournament began Tuesday afternoon with a pair of Group A/AA quarterfinal matchups at the National Training Center, one of them featuring a Bay Rivers field hockey power.

The Grafton Clippers are one of two Bay Rivers representatives in this year's tournament, joined by the Jamestown Eagles. Grafton earned a state berth by beating Courtland for third place in last week's Region 1 tournament. The Clippers got off to a winning start on Tuesday, scoring a 3-1 win over Region 2 runner-up Monticello to earn a spot in Friday's Group A/AA state semifinals, where they will face district rival and tournament champion Jamestown, who drew a first round bye and a semifinal berth. That semifinal is scheduled for 1pm Friday at the National Training Center. The second semifinal is also set with Chancellor advancing thanks to a 7-0 shutout of Region A representative Northumberland, Chancellor plays Western Albemarle at 3pm. Both games scheduled for field number two at the training center.
Don't forget the Group AAA state quarterfinals kick off on Thursday, also at the training center, as Eastern Region champion Cox, seeking a 15th state title in school history, takes on Northern Region runner-up Oakton on field number two at 1pm followed by Eastern Region runner-up Princess Anne facing Northern champion W.T. Woodson on field number two at 3pm. All four quarterfinal winners advance to Friday's Group AAA state semifinals at 1 and 3pm with the state final set for Saturday at 1pm, following the Group A/AA state final at 1030am.
