State field hockey finals

Once again, the Cox Falcons field hockey team showed why they are heads and shoulders above the rest of the state of Virginia. The reigning state champions led from start to finish on Saturday as they completed yet another impressive postseason run with a 15th state crown.

The Falcons roared past Stafford, 6-0, in the Group AAA championship match at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach. The six goals by Cox are the most in a state final since the tournament started back in 1977. Cox otudueled and outscored their opponents 109-10 during the regular season and an impressive 37-2 in postseason play. Kiley Allosso opened the scoring eight minutes into the game converting a beautiful pass from Kelsey Rosenmeier. Taylor Rhea made it 2-0 with her team leading 39th goal of the year followed by a goal from Cara Witte off a feed from Rosenmeier to increase their advantage to 3-0. Rosenmeier joined in the scoring party one minute later to make it 4-0 and Allosso closed out an impressive five goal first half for the Falcons scoring her second goal of the half off a penalty corner with assists from Rhea and Stephanie DeMasi.
Rosenmeier added her second goal of the contest ten minutes into the second half off a feed from Rhea to complete the record setting day. Cox showed its dominance once again outshooting Stafford 22-3 and 12-0 in penalty corners as they complete its championship season at 23-2, securing a second straight state title concluding an emotional day, week and season for head coach Julie Swain and the Cox Falcons.
Earlier on Saturday at the training center, the Grafton Clippers saw their Group A/AA championship hopes dashed as Western Albemarle registered a 2-1 overtime win on a goal as time expired. Despite a disappointing conclusion to their season, the Clippers have plenty to be proud about. They finished fourth in Bay Rivers district play and third in the region 1 tournament to advance to states, then defeated Monticello in the quarterfinals followed by an upset win over region champion and district rival Jamestown in the semifinals. Grafton opened the scoring in the first half on a goal from Lindsay Leonard as they owned the first half before the Warriors fought back to even the game in the second half and force overtime, where they capped a comeback state title win. The Clippers complete an amazing season at 15-8.
Finally, we cannot forget the VIS Division 2 state finals between Cape Henry and Walsingham. The Dolphins beat Walsingham twice in the regular season, but when it counted the most, the Trojans were able to gain a measure of revenge. The game went to overtime before the third seeded Trojans scored twice in the extra session to capture the state crown and complete a championship season finishing at 12-5-2.
