State field hockey semifinals
A familiar face returns to the Group AAA state field hockey title game, while a district rival saw its title run derailed. The Cox Falcons are one win away from a 15th state championship in school history while Princess Anne saw its first half lead disappear against Northwest Region winner Stafford. And in a battle of Bay Rivers powers, Grafton punched its ticket to the Group A/AA championship game.
In the first Group AAA semifinal, Cox scored the only goal it would need against Mountain View, from the Northwest Region, in the first half as Monica Hensleigh scored unassisted to give the defending state champs a 1-0 halftime advantage. The Falcons added two more tallies to solidify the win, Kelsey Rosenmeier fed Kiley Allosso for a beautiful marker to give Cox a 2-0 edge and later Allosso's fed Stephanie DeMasi to close out a solid 3-0 win. The Falcons outshot Mountain View 27-1 in a dominating performance ensuring another state title game appearance.
In the second semifinal, Princess Anne opened the scoring in the opening half on a beautiful play by Maartje van Rijswijk for a 1-0 halftime lead. Amy Abernathy's goal with just under 14 minutes remaining gave the Cavaliers a two goal lead when Stafford stormed back scoring three times in just 11 minutes, the game winner coming off a penalty corner with just two minutes remaining in the game, ending P.A.'s season at 18-4. Cox and Stafford battle for the Group AAA title at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach Saturday at 1pm.
A pair of Bay Rivers field hockey powers dueled for one of two spots in the Group A/AA state final. The number three seed in the Region 1 tournament, the Grafton Clippers, roared to a two goal first half lead and added a third marker early in the second half before region champion Jamestown could score its first goal to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Clippers added a game clinching tally minutes later for a 4-1 win. The Eagles season ends at 19-4-1 while the Clippers advance to the state A/AA final set for 1030am Saturday also at the National Training Center at the beach.
