State Group AAA Field Hockey Quarterfinals

We can now say the Beach District does have the home field advantage when it comes to the State Field Hockey Tournament unfolding this week at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach. Both Cox and Princess Anne using the home field to their advantage in each of their quarterfinal matchups on Thursday.

First up, the defending state champion Cox Falcons, seeking a 15th state title in school history, took on the Northern Region runner-up Oakton Cougars. The Falcons scoring all the goals they would need in the first half on a pair of unassisted tallies, one by Stephanie Fee and one by Kiley Allosso to build a 2-0 halftime lead. Cox added an insurance goal late in the second half as Allosso fed Kelsey Rosenmeier to increase their advantage to 3-0. The Falcons defense made the lead stand up as Cox move on to the semifinals on Friday where they will play Mountain View from the Northwest Region after the Wildcats hung on for a 2-1 win over Thomas Dale. This semifinal matchup takes place at 1pm on field number one at the training center.
It was a battle of the Cavaliers in the second set of quarterfinals as Princess Anne battled Northern Region winner W.T. Woodson. These two teams met back in 2003 for the state title, won by Woodson in overtime. After a scoreless first half, Woodson opened the scoring early in the second half as Shelly Montgomery fed Marie Whitehead to give them a 1-0 lead. P.A. fought back for an equalizer minutes later as Torri Jackson tied the contest at 1-1. Later on, Maartje Van Rijswijk scored the game winner as Princess Anne comes back to post a huge 2-1 win to advance to Friday's semifinal at 3pm, also on field number one. The Cavaliers will face Stafford, the Northwest champion, who scored the only goal they would need in the second half as the Indians blank James River out of the Central Region, 1-0.
On field number two, the Group A/AA semifinals take place, first up, Bay Rivers rivals Grafton and Jamestown play at 1pm followed by Chancellor and Western Albemarle at 3pm. The winners will battle for the A/AA state crown Saturday morning at 1030am, followed by the Group AAA final at 1pm.
