Group AA All-State Honors
Poquoson made believers out of many during the latter stages of the season and postseason as the Islanders erased any reminders of a winless campaign last year with a 8-5 record and a berth in the Division 3 state semifinals.
Head coach Elliott Duty is being honored for his team's dramatic turnaround, he has been named the state Group AA Coach of the Year by the Associated Press. The key to Poquoson's revival in 2007, passing the ball as quarterback Eric Nixon accounted for over 1,500 passing yards, more than double from last season.
Several Bay Rivers District players were named to the Group AA first team. Leading the way, Smithfield's Dyrell Roberts who ran his way to the state record books, becoming the fourth running back in Bay Rivers or Peninsula District history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season, finishing with 2,236 yards and 38 touchdowns.
Bay Rivers champion Lafayette, who finished 11-1 before bowing to Powhatan in the Division 4 region title game, had three players on the first team led by defensive lineman Will Hill and defensive back T.J. Ptachick along with punter Matt Mares.
