Group AAA All-State Honors
One of the most potent running backs to grace the high school fields of Hampton Roads leads a group of five local players on the state Group AAA All State first team. Salem's Kevin Whaley made first team all-state for a second straight year thanks to 1,661 yards and 25 total touchdowns. The 5-11, 175 pound senior completed his outstanding career with 6,301 yards, the all-time regular season and single game points leader in South Hampton Roads football history.
Joining Whaley on the first team offense, a virtual rock on the Maury Commodores offensive line, 6-5, 305 pound tackle Vinston Painter. The Virginia Tech-bound tackle makes the Group AAA first team for a second straight season.
Three defensive players earned all state first team honors, starting at linebacker with Salem's Lyndell Gibson. The 6-0, 225 pound senior, who has committed to play at Virginia Tech, earned Beach District Defensive Player of the Year for a second time. Gibson is joined at linebacker by Oscar Smith's Perry Jones, who set a single season school mark with 140 tackles in addition to 11 sacks and five interceptions. Completing the list, fellow Oscar Smith star Todd Harrelson, known more for his offense, who had four interceptions at defensive back while catching 61 passes for over 1,200 yards on offense.
Nine more local players were named to the Group AAA all-state second team, led by Bayside senior quarterback E.J. Manuel, who will be heading to Florida State next season. Manuel is joined on the second team offense by Great Bridge wide receiver Logan Heastie, Deep Creek tight end Devin Arrington and Oscar Smith guard Jarmara Gray, while the second team defense is led by Green Run's Joe Jones and Oscar Smith's Evan Hailes on the defensive line, Lake Taylor linebacker Mike Privott and fellow Titan Lenny Paiva and Bayside's Marquel Thomas at defensive back.
One final note, the Group AAA Player of the Year is Westfield's Mike Glennon, the younger brother of Virginia Tech quarterback Sean Glennon, who led the Bulldogs to the Division 6 state title and a perfect 15-0 record while passing for over 2,500 yards and 32 touchdowns. Glennon is headed for North Carolina State next season.
