FUTURE MUSTANG

E.J. Drewery could learn to like Dallas, Texas a lot. Let's hope so. That's where he's going to spend his college years. He has given a verbal commitment to SMU. Drewery is a 6-6, 205lb receiver from Atlantic Shores Christian in Chesapeake. He led the state independent schools in receiving this year with 57 rec., 1156 yds and 12 td's. He was the team captain and an all-stater.

MANUEL NAMED PARADE ALL-AMERICAN

The honors continue to pour in for Bayside High quarterback, E.J. Manuel. He was one of seven quarterbacks named to this year's Parade All-American football team. The selection process is done by coaches, jounalists, scouts and recruiters.

PENINSULA SHOWDOWN

We'll have to wait for the Peninsula District Tournament before we declare a champion. However, for now count Bethel as the best team in the district. The Bruins avenged their only loss of the season by beating Warwick 56-43. So both teams now have won on the other team's homecourt. The Bruins stretched their record to 13-1. NSU head softball coach Kary Kankey and first-year assistant coach Sam Kszepka will serve as two of the camp staff for the 20th Annual Tidewater Girls' Softball Clinic, Feb. 17 at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk.

Corey Law couldn't wait until he got home. His coach, Leroy Ricks, at Deep Creek High School told me Corey called him from I-85 on his way back from High Point. Law said the college is a perfect fit and that's where he wants to play his college basketball.

Big day for Western Branch at Va Duals

Another year, another Virginia Duals is in the books. The 28th edition wrapped up this weekend at the Hampton Coliseum and while all eyes focus on such powers as Great Bridge and Cox, we must keep an eye out on a fellow Eastern Region team looking to make some noise during the upcoming regional and state tournaments.

MILESTONE WIN

It's been a big week for Nansemond River boys basketball. They knocked off rival and previously unbeaten Kings Fork on Tuesday. On Friday night they defeated Lakeland 85-64. It marks the 300th win of Coach Ed Young's high school career. The Warriors are now 10-1.

WRESTLING RANKINGS

The Hampton Roads area is very well represented in the latest wrestling rankings for the state of Virginia. According to VirginiaWrestling.com, six schools from our area belong in the top 10. The site also ranks four wrestlers as the best in their weight class.

VIRGINIA DUALS

Just a quick reminder. The 28th edition of the Virginia Duals is on the calendar for Friday, January 11 and Saturday, January 12 at the Hampton Coliseum. It's our own version of amateur "wrestlemania". Besides 5 of the top 25 ranked colleges in the country, 48 High School Wrestling teams will be represented. That includes powerhouse Great Bridge High School. The action starts 9 AM Friday and runs most of the day. The finals are Satur

While his teammate, E.J. Manuel was making plays during the Under Armour All-American football game from Florida, Deion Walker made it know where he'll be spending his college years. The Christchurch wide receiver narrowed his choices down to Penn State and Notre Dame.

Manuel In All-American Game

Bayside quarterback, E.J. Manuel will be among some of the best in the country playing this Saturday in the Under Armour All-American high school all-star football game from Florida. Game time is set for 2pm. Manuel will one of several quarterbacks in the game and joins Westfield quarterback, Mike Glennon and Christchurch wide receiver, Deion Walker.
