Big day for Western Branch at Va Duals
Another year, another Virginia Duals is in the books. The 28th edition wrapped up this weekend at the Hampton Coliseum and while all eyes focus on such powers as Great Bridge and Cox, we must keep an eye out on a fellow Eastern Region team looking to make some noise during the upcoming regional and state tournaments.
Western Branch made a statement during its duals run on Friday and Saturday as the Bruins captured the Black and Blue High School division after a convincing 41-21 rout of Peninsula power Hampton in Saturday's final. The Bruins scored as least 40 points as a team in their matches winning by 14 points or more each match.
It was not the best of duals for perennial favorite Great Bridge. The Wildcats finished a forgettable run with a stunning 32-24 loss to Fauquier in the National High School consolations. It is the first time the area's top ranked wrestling team failed to place in the tournament.
Kellam defeated Poquoson, 40-22, to capture third place in the American High School division after defeating Beach District power Kempsville by the same score in the consolation semifinals. It was some payback if you will for the Knights, who were smarting from a 34-30 setback to the Chiefs last week after Kellam built a 30-3 advantage.
In the finals, number two seed Grundy, who beat Kellam 35-18 in Saturday's semifinals, beat top seed Canon-McMillian 31-28 in the final.
