Great Bridge wins its 18th straight region wrestling title

An annual rite of winter continues as once again, a local wrestling power adds another championship to its trophy case. For the 18th consecutive year, the Great Bridge Wildcats took advantage of home mat advantage, if you will, over at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake to capture the Eastern Region title but it was not easy.

Great Bridge faced a challenge from Beach district power Kellam in the final night of competition. Both schools had five finalists but it was the Wildcats, who led in the team standings going in. Great Bridge's run of individual crowns started with Austin Hurst in the 103 pound class, Kellam responded with Sean O'Shea's win at 119 and Mike Holcomb at 125. Brian Beatson nearly pinned Great Bridge's chances to repeat on the mat at 130 but was stunned in the final by Hickory's Connor Simons. From then on, the Wildcats seized control and never looked back as Joey Grainger's win at 152 extended his school's advantage. Great Bridge sealed the win with victories at 160, 171 and 189.
The Wildcats have eight qualifiers moving on to next week's state tournament, which will also take place at Oscar Smith. Kellam will send six of its wrestlers to states. Action begins next Friday, February 22 at 11am with quarterfinal matches starting at 630pm. The semifinals take place on Saturday, February 23 at 11am with the state finals beginning at 730pm. Great Bridge will be seeking a 19th state title and first since 2006.
