Eastern Region semifinal hoops- night two
Night two of basketball's Eastern Region semis at Churchland High provided a close call for the undefeated Princess Anne Lady Cavs and a buzzer beater finish between a pair of Southeastern District rivals.
In the girls semifinal, Princess Anne were seemingly in command in the second half, leading Lake Taylor by 23 points in the third quarter. The Titans roared back into contention thanks to a pair of freshmen, Jasmine Cuffee and Toia Giggetts, as they sliced the 23 point deficit down to just six with a little over five minutes remaining. The Lady Cavaliers responded with some stingy defense and timely offense, led by Raven Harris and her game high 23 points. P.A.'s standout freshman center, Elizabeth Williams, was a force inside, 11 points, 16 rebounds and ten blocks, a triple double. Cuffee led Lake Taylor with 16 points, Giggetts added 14. Princess Anne remains unbeaten at 28-0 after a hard fought 64-54 regional semifinal win, earning a state tournament quarterfinal berth and a chance to face Peninsula power Heritage in the regional final Monday night 6pm at Churchland. Lake Taylor's season comes to an end at 23-4.
In the boys' semifinal, Deep Creek opened up with a pair of dunks bringing the packed house at Churchland to its collective feet, but the Bulldogs answered by building a 17-10 lead after one quarter. The Hornets opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run to get back into contention and hold a 26-23 halftime lead. Deep Creek returned to its high flying ways to start the second half, scoring on a pair of slam dunks, Corey Law scored 13 of his game high 25 points in the third quarter helping the Purple and White to an 11 point lead heading into the final quarter, a quarter that would be one for the ages. The Bulldogs held the Hornets to just two field goals in the final eight minutes of the game. Deep Creek held a one point lead, but turned the ball over deep in its own backcourt with 15.6 seconds left. King's Fork got the ball back, missed a pair of possible game winners and then Jamar Wertz was at the right place at the right time scoring the game winner off the glass at the buzzer for the dramatic 56-55 win, the Bulldogs' third straight win over the Creek this season. Wertz led the Bulldogs with 21 points, none bigger than the final two points he scored to propel his team into Monday's regional final against Bethel at 8pm also at Churchland. King's Fork punches its ticket to the state tournament for the first time in school history as they improve to 24-4 while Deep Creek's season ends at 21-6.
