State boys basketball quarterfinals

The Bethel Bruins showed why they are Eastern Region champs in Saturday's state quarterfinals against Langley at Churchland High School by using their high flying offense to jump out to a big advantage and never relinquishing the lead in punching their ticket to Tuesday's state semifinals in Richmond.

The tone of the game was set 1:45 into the game after Langley opened the scoring. Paul Meredith lofted a perfect alley oop pass to Bill Weaver rocking the near capacity crowd to its collective feet. From there on, the Bruins took the advantage, thanks to a 19-4 run, opening a 19 point lead and holding an 18 point halftime lead. Langley did fight back deep into the second half to make it close, closing to within five late in the fourth quarter, but the home team hit the key shot and free throws when needed to put the game away for good. Weaver led the Bruin attack with 20 points, Tre Lee added 10, Mbai Olivier had nine as Bethel, whose record moves to 29-1, move on to face John Marshall in Tuesday's state semifinal at 3:45 at VCU's Siegel Center in Richmond.
After a nearly two hour delay due to a opwer outage, the King's Fork Bulldogs finally got their state quarterfinal match against T.C. Williams underway on Saturday night in Fairfax.
The Bulldogs stayed competitive in the first half, trailing by only two points, 26-24. But just like the power outage which delayed the opening tip-off, King's Fork's offense was shut down, thanks to a T.C. Williams 14-2 run to start the third quarter that put the game out of reach and ended any state title hopes for the Bulldogs in only their fourth year of existence. Another factor in the change of momentum towards the home school was that King's Fork only shot two of ten from the field in that quarter. King's Fork sees a disappointing end to an otherwise outstanding campaign at 24-6. T.C. Williams advance to play Petersburg in Tuesday's other state boys semifinal also at VCU, game time set for 730pm.
