Eastern Region baseball- Day one

Monday was not a good day to be a top seed in the Eastern Region baseball tournament at Old Dominion University. Three top seeds, all district champions, were upset in Monday's quarterfinal rounds.

The day started bright and early Monday morning as Eastern runner-up Granby used some timely offense and some Landstown mistakes to stun the Beach champion Eagles 7-3. Landstown trailed by a run in their half of the opening frame when they scored three to take a two run advantage, only to see the Comets blitz their way back into the lead for good. Landstown committed three errors including a misplayed RBI triple and outfield error in the sixth. Landstown, who started the season winning 15 of its first 17 games, stumbled down the stretch, losing four if its last five games after winning the Beach regular season title and end their season on a disappointing note at 16-6.
Meanwhile, the Comets have little time to savor the moment for they have to face Indian River in Wednesday's 5pm semifinal at ODU. The Braves, coming in as the number two seed from the Southeastern District, scored ten runs in the first three innings against a stunned Hampton Crabber squad. The Crabbers, who came in as Peninsula champions, did fight their way back from a 10-1 deficit to make it close at the end, but not enough to overtake the Braves. Hampton's season comes to an end at 20-4 while Indian River improves its record to 17-7.
In quarterfinal number three, once again, another area top-seed was sent packing. Eastern District champion Maury ousted by Beach runner-up Ocean Lakes, 8-4. The Dolphins got a solid performance from starter Ryan Shook, who allowed only two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six and getting three crucial double plays. The Commodores did battle back from an 8-1 deficit by plating three runs in the seventh to make it close, but not enough for a comeback win. Maury's season ends at 20-4 while Ocean Lakes improves to 15-9 and will await the winner of the Bethel/Western Branch game played later Monday night. The second semifinal will take place Wednesday at 730pm and also at ODU with the winners advancing to next week's state tournament and a spot in Thursday's regional final.
