Eastern Region baseball final
Down 10-1 in the fourth inning of Thursday's Eastern Region baseball final at ODU, Indian River started a comeback, a comeback which came up one run short- still, the Braves will play on, next Tuesday in the state tournament quarterfinals, while Bethel gets to host a quarterfinal at ODU.
The Bruins jumped out to a huge 11-1 lead thanks to key hits such as Jesse Wyatt's bases clearing triple in the third and Kizuku Scott's two run home run the next inning. Bethel scored eight runs on six hits and a pair or Braves miscues thru three innings.
But the Braves would respond, scoring one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to draw close and got even closer in the seventh, adding three more runs on a single, groundout and error, but could not get past Bethel in the end, the final score was Bethel 11, Indian River 10.
While the Bruins struck out 11 times, six players had RBI's and they took advantage of five Braves errors and three wild pitches. As a team during the regionals, Bethel scored 32 runs in three games.
Both teams have already earned spots in next week's Group AAA state baseball tournament. For their effort, the Bruins earn a chance to host the Northern runner-up next Tuesday 6pm at ODU, while Indian River will face the Northern Region winner on the road next Tuesday as well.
