Eastern Region baseball semifinals

This year's Eastern Region baseball tournament has been anything but unpredictable. Two days after all four top seeds were shown the door, time for the upstarts to battle for a pair of region title game spots and berths in next week's state baseball tournament.

In semifinal number one at ODU on Wednesday, Indian River, who scored an upset over Peninsula champ Hampton, faced Granby, who eliminated Beach champ Landstown. The Braves were seeking their first trip to the Group AAA state tournament for the first time in their first region appearance since 1999 and they took advantage of Comets pitching as eight different starters had at least one of the team's ten hits in the game. Matt Dickason's two-run double and Kevin Howerin's two-run single accounting for most of their offense, while Dickason and Kyle Taduran combined on a six-hitter as the Braves win a must win game for a fifth straight game, 7-3 your final, as they advance to the state baseball quarterfinals for the first time in school history.
In semifinal number two, Peninsula runner-up Bethel continued their postseason march by rolling past Ocean Lakes, 11-1. All 11 runs were scored over the final three innings of the game after Bethel was held hitless for four innings. Bruins starter Jack Maxey tossed a two-hitter for the win as Bethel advances to its first state tournament appearance in school history.
But before next week's states, Bethel will face Indian River for the region title Thursday at ODU, first pitch scheduled for 6pm.
