Eastern region boys soccer semifinals
Wednesday's boys soccer semifinals at ODU featured a pair of one-sided contests as two teams punched their tickets to Friday's region final and more importantly, a spot in next week's state tournament.
In semifinal number one, Beach District champ Cox rolled past Southeastern titleist Hickory, 6-2. The Falcons took control of the game in the opening forty minutes of regulation as Hunter Byrnes converted on a great pass to give Cox the early 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Alex Martin scores to make it 2-0 and later on, Stephen Mein made it 3-0 at halftime. Alex's brother, Will Martin, made it 4-0 in the early stages of the second half before the Hawks woke out of hibernation as Cody Merkes cut the Falcons lead to 4-1 followed by a David Meadows score just about a minute later to make it interesting at 4-2. But the Falcons' speed and playmaking were just too much for Hickory to overcome. A pair of late scores from the Martin brothers put the final touch on a Cox win, which secured them a berth in Friday's Eastern Region final at Powhatan Field at 730pm, when they will face the Kecoughtan Warriors. The Peninsula District champs jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Maury scored its only goal late in the contest as Kecoughtan recorded a 3-1 win.
