Eastern Region softball- Day one

Pitching is the most important ingredient in the game of softball. And it was in evidence on day one of the Eastern Region Tournament at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach. All four victors in Monday's quarterfinals won by shutout, including one on a no-hitter by the reigning state champions.

Kellam freshman Miranda Paul pitched the game of her life on Monday against Eastern District runner-up Granby. Paul firing her first no-hitter in the Knights' 7-0 win and improving her record to 17-4. Paul also got plenty of support from her teammates, who scored all seven runs in the early stages of the game. Now the defending state champs get ready to face Hickory in Tuesday's 5pm semifinal. The Southeastern champion Hawks got a two-hit masterpiece from Jenn Gniadek as Hickory blanked Peninsula runner-up Warwick 5-0.
Also on Monday, another Beach power rolled onto the semifinal round. Salem shut out Eastern champ Churchland 3-0. Kendra Knight, coming off a perfect game in last week's Beach final against Kellam, tossed a one-hitter while striking out 18. The Sun Devils will face Peninsula champ Woodside in the second semifinal Tuesday at 7pm. The Wolverines scored the only run of the game in the eighth inning to beat Southeastern runner-up Western Branch 1-0.
