Local prep product off to the SEC
A couple of years ago, Arkansas landed one of the top prep basketball talents to come out of Hampton Roads. The Razorback program have now added another local star to its team for next basketball season.
Marshawn Powell, who played a key role for the Menchville Monarchs before moving to prep school, has committed to Arkansas. Powell is a 6-7 forward who is one of the top inside the paint prospects in the nation.
Powell averaged 12 points, nine rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game in leading the Monarchs to both Peninsula District regular-season and postseason titles and a semfinal berth in the Eastern Region tournament.
After his sophomore season, Powell moved on to Miller School, a prep school in Charlottesville, where he was even more of an offensive force, averaging 22 points and 12 boards this past season.
Powell will be playing alongside former Woodside guard Stefan Welsh, who just completed his sophomore season in Fayetteville.
Powell also received interest from LaSalle, Maryland, Miami and Florida State.
