Poquoson baseball and softball update
Poquoson had a chance to score a daily double in Friday's state semifinals with wins in both baseball and softball.
The Islanders had to wait until Thursday to win its quarterfinal game because of weather delays and advanced to today's baseball semifinal at Radford. The Islanders built a 4-1 lead early in its game against Alleghany as Kyle Crockett's solo home run and an RBI single by Eric Nixon gave Poquoson a 2-0 lead.
Kendall Charles added a two run shot to give the Islanders a 4-1 lead, but then Alleghany roared back with four runs in its half of the sixth to pull out the 5-4 win which end the season for Poquoson at 19-9. Alleghany will play Powhatan at 1pm Saturday for the Group AA baseball title.
In softball semifinal play, the Islanders were shut down and shut out by Tunstall 2-0. Pitcher Star Gibbs went the distance for Poquoson, giving up just three hits, but two costly runs in the top of the sixth were hers and her team's undoing today.
As a team, the Islanders managed five hits but could not score against Tunstall pitcher Brittany Arnn, who pitched a brillant five hit complete game shutout while striking out eight in the win.
Tunstall will play Broad Run at 1pm in the state title game, while Poquoson ends the season at 19-8.
