Smithfield names new football coach
There will be a new coach roaming the sidelines at Smithfield High School this fall as their new coach is moving from the front office back to the field.
After two years as an assistant principal at Northampton East High in North Carolina, Tyris Hill will be returning to the sidelines as the Packers new head coach.
Hill is familiar with the Bay Rivers District after serving as an assistant coach at nearby Southampton High followed by head coaching stints at Greensville High in Emporia and North Carolina's Northwest Halifax High.
Hill takes over for Chris Fraser, who posted a 27-35 record in six seasons at Smithfield, including a pair of playoff appearances.
Hill will face a daunting task this fall, replacing 22 seniors from last year's squad including 12 starters, one of them, Virginia Tech-bound running back Dyrell Roberts, who accounted for 2,256 yards and 38 touchdowns in 2007.
Hill is one of four new coaches making their Bay Rivers debuts this fall. Besides Hill, Tracy Harrod moves on from six seasons at Denbigh to take over at Bruton, Dan Rounds moves up from defensive coordinator to head coach at New Kent and Billy Jarvis takes over at Warhill, aiming for the school's first win in football.
