State boys soccer quarterfinals
For the most part, it was a successful night for most of our area teams in the state boys soccer quarterfinals, especially for a pair of Bay Rivers schools.
First up, in Group AAA, Eastern Region champion Cox found itself in a battle against visiting Robinson at the Virginia Beach SportsPlex. The Falcons and Rams were scoreless at halftime and it seemed like we were headed to extra time and stiil scoreless when Alex Makcumbi scored in the 71st minute beating Cox goalie Matt Harkins for the game's only goal.
Cox (18-3-1) had a pair of chances late in the game but could not get the ball in the net ending their season and the career of legendary coach Jim Snodgrass, who is calling it a career after 26 years. Snodgrass coached the Falcons to ten Beach District regular season titles and six tournament crowns, nine region titles and a state championship in 1990.
Robinson will play either Thomas Dale or Osbourn in Friday's 6pm semifinal at Westfield.
Meanwhile, region runner-up Kecoughtan, in its first state appearance in 16 years, is making the most of its return and has moved one step closer in its pursuit of a state crown.
Karl Kummer scored the game winner with five minutes left to beat Stone Bridge, 2-1, and advance to Friday's semifinal at Westfield at 8pm against Deep Run.
Robert Alberti set the tone in the second half for the Warriors after his goal tied the game at 1-1, while goaltender Nick White came up with some key saves to lead Kecoughtan to the state semifinals.
In Group AA play, both Bay Rivers teams came up victorious. Jamestown scored two goals four minutes apart as the Eagles held off Brentsville, 2-1. Scott Cutler scored on a penalty kick midway in the second half to even the game at 1-1 and Winston Mattheisen scored the game winner four minutes later as Jamestown advances to face Blacksburg in Friday's 10am semifinal at Radford.
Meanwhile, Grafton scored two early first half goals and made them stand up in a 2-1 win at Park View Sterling. Joe Skaja and Andrew Bonorden scored both Grafton goals as the Griffins advance to face Hidden Valley in Friday's semfinals, also at Radford.
