State girls soccer quarterfinals

One Beach District power used a goal-filled first half to punch its ticket to Friday's state semifinals in girls soccer, while another Beach school had its postseason title hopes washed away.

Over at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, Beach and Eastern Region champion Cox used home field advantage to its advantage against visiting Westfield. The Lady Falcons scored all the goals they would need in the opening forty minutes of play on their way to a 4-0 win and a spot in Friday's state semifinals.
Cox opened the scoring just under three minutes into the game when Cara Witte scored on an open net for a 1-0 Lady Falcons lead. Kelly Morrison added to the lead midway in the opening half when she scored off a beautiful feed from Kelsey Boyd to increase their advantage to 2-0.
Just under a minute later, Cristen Atchison scored off a rebound to make it a 3-0 lead and the rout was on. Cox closed out the scoring with just about three minutes remaining in the opening half as Chloe Russell converted on a goal off a Morrison feed to make it 4-0.
Goaltender Kristin Carden and backup Taylor Rhea, who came in late in the game, combined on the shutout as the Lady Falcons move on to face either Mills Godwin or Battlefield in Friday's 2pm semifinal at Westfield. Cox, who have been state finalists the past two seasons, improves to 20-3.
Meanwhile, the season is over for First Colonial as they fought two tough opponents, the one on the soccer pitch and the skies. The Lady Patriots fell at Robinson, 3-1, in a game which was interrupted for over an hour due to inclement weather in Northern Virginia.
Robinson scored a pair of goals in the game's first 20 minutes for a 2-0 lead when lightning in the Fairfax area delayed play for more than an hour. When the game resumed, F.C. scored to cut the Rams' lead to one as Bailey Widman scored in the 24th minute to make it a 2-1 lead, but the momentum would be short-lived as the Rams converted on a goal just before halftime for a 3-1 lead, which would be the final score.
First Colonial's season comes to a disappointing end at 19-5 as they fall in the state quarters for a second straight year.
The season is also over for the Lafayette Rams, who lost a 2-1 decision on the road at Broad Run in Group AA quarterfinal play.
Allyn Potts scored the only goal for the Rams (17-2-1), who were outshot 12 to 3 in the first half and 26 to 6 for the game.
