State Group AAA girls soccer update

The Cox Falcons advanced to the state girls soccer championship the last two seasons, only to come up short. The Falcons were looking to reverse that trend in this year's state tournament, starting with a win in Friday's semifinal at Westfield.

Cox grabbed the lead and the early momentum nine minutes into its semifinal match against Battlefield as Jessica McNamara passed to Charley Martin, who redirected her shot in for a goal and the early 1-0 advantage.
But the Bobcats got the equalizer in the 25th minute past Cox goaltender Kristin Carden as the game was tied at 1-1.
Both teams fighting back and forth the rest of the way until Battlefield scored in the game's 70th minute off a bad clearing attempt, leading to the eventual game winner as Battlefield delivered a heart-breaking 2-1 setback to a Cox team driven to return to the state title game, only to be denied in Friday's semifinal.
For Carden and six of her fellow seniors, it was a bitter pill to take as their season comes to an end at 20-4. For a third straight year, the Falcons are denied a state championship, but it does not take away the fact Cox had once again an outstanding season, full of great moments, great goals and great teamwork. And for those players returning next season, it bodes well for Cox High School and not so well for their opponents.
