State softball quarterfinals

Hampton Roads will be well represented in this weekend's state softball tournaments. Poquoson won its quarterfinal game, but Bay Rivers rival New Kent's season is done. And in Group AAA, Woodside held off Westfield, while Hickory's top fireballer pitched another gem in its quarterfinal win.

Hickory pitcher Jennifer Gniadek has been sensational all season long and Tuesday night, she pitched a masterpiece against visiting Herndon. Gniadek tossed a complete game no-hitter with 12 strikeouts in a 2-0 Hawks win. She also singled in a key fourth inning which led to the only runs Hickory would need. Gniadek allowed only a pair of baserunners in the game, one on a throwing error and one on a wild pitch.
Gniadek's improves her record this season to 21-1 while extending her scoreless inning streak to 33 innings. Hickory (25-1) is back in the state semifinals for a second time in the last three years, but will have to wait another day to find out who their semfinal opponent will be, because the Deep Run vs. Loudon Valley game was rained out and re-scheduled for Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Woodside's game at Westfield was delayed for 108 minutes due to rain and lightning, but eventually, the game was played. Despite the delays and three Wolverine errors, Woodside held off Westfield's late rally to post a 7-4 win to advance to Friday's semifinals.
Kristie Hoeffer had three hits, including a home run in the sixth inning, while Matricka Hale and pitcher Gabby Andino had two hits each to pace their team's ten hit attack. Woodside's record now stands at 21-3 and will face Battlefield in Friday's semifinals.
In Group AA play, Poquoson held off Loudoun County, 4-3. The Islanders got a home run from Catherine Clavin in the sixth which would prove to be the game winner as Pooquson (19-7) move on to face Tunstall on Friday at 10am at Radford.
Bay Rivers rival New Kent's season came to an end Tuesday night, falling at Broad Run 3-0. The Trojans end their season with a second straight loss after winning 17 straight games during the year and finish the year at 21-4-1.
