District field hockey update
The once muddied and confusing Eastern Region field hockey playoff picture has become a lot more clearer over the last few days as some familiar faces will be making a return trip to region play next week.
We begin at the beach, the Beach District that is. For a second straight year, the two-time defending state champion Cox Falcons had to fight their way out of the district tournament just to make regionals.
On Thursday, the Falcons roared past Ocean Lakes, 6-0, to get the berth, thanks to three goals from Cara Witte, a pair of goals from Taylor Rhea and one more tally from Stephanie DeMasi.
Cox will be joined by Princess Anne, who beat the Falcons in a playoff to earn an automatic Eastern Region playoff spot. The Cavaliers blanked Bayside, 2-0, on a pair of goals from Maartje van Rijswijk in Thursday's other semifinal, setting the stage for the rubber match between these two field hockey powers. P.A. won last week's playoff and Cox won their regular season matchup.
In other postseason play, Lakeland and Western Branch will represent the Southeastern District. The Cavaliers will face the Bruins Friday at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach at 3pm for the district title.
On Thursday, Gloucester battled Kecoughtan for the Peninsula crown. The Dukes were the top seed, the Warriors number two as both schools have already punched their tickets to regional play as well.
The Eastern District has already been decided as regular season and tournament winner Maury will be joined by district runner-up Granby.
Here is the Eastern Region quarterfinal schedule for Tuesday, November 4::
-Lakeland vs. Granby- 1pm
-Princess Anne vs. Kecoughtan- 1pm
-Cox vs. Gloucester- 3pm
-Maury vs. Western Branch- 3pm
The quarterfinal winners will face off in Thursday's semifinals at 1 & 3pm with state tournament berths on the line. The final is set for Friday at 3pm. All games will be played at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach, which will once again be the site of this year's state tournament November 13-15.
