State Group AAA golf final round

In Tuesday's final day of the Group AAA state golf tournament in Midlothian, the spotlight shined brightly on Hampton Roads' top prep golfer as he repeated as state champion for a second time in three years, while the Eastern Region champs roared back into contention.

Cox senior Brinson Paolini won his second state title, closing with a birdie on 18, one of seven he would make on the final day. Paolini shot a one-under 71 to finish with a two-day total of 141, three under par, two shots better than Freeman's Matt Sizemore, who led after the first round thanks to a four-under 68, only to see his game fall apart on Tuesday after a 75 ended his state title hopes at 143.
While Paolini celebrated another state title, his teammates were not as fortunate as the Falcons' bid for a third straight state crown came to an end as Cox ended seventh overall, 16 shots behind champion James River.
Cox's Beach District rival, Kellam, bounced back from a disappointing start on Monday by shooting 306 as a team for a second straight day and finished second overall, six shots behind James River.
Chase Duffy was the top Knight after back-to-back 75's while the school's top player, Wade Wawner, tumbled to an 82.
Paolini's teammate, Chris Valianos, finished among the top 15 despite a final round 78, Valianos tied for 11th with a total score of 151.
