Eastern Region field hockey final
Friday's Eastern Region field hockey final was an all-Beach District title tilt between two-time defending region and state champion Cox and rival Princess Anne, seeking its first region crown in three years.
Both Cox and Princess Anne have already earned berths in next week's state tournament in Virginia Beach.
In their fourth meeting of the year, the Falcons grabbed the early advantage two minutes in when Cara Witte converted a crossing pass from Kelsey Rosenmeier to give Cox a 1-0 lead.
With just around nine minutes to go before halftime, Cox added to its lead with what proved to be the game winning goal off a penalty corner as Taylor Rhea fed Stephanie DeMasi to make it 2-0.
The Cavaliers responded just about one minute later as Maartje van Rijswijk scored her 37th goal of the season to pull P.A. within a goal, 2-1.
From then on, it was a defensive struggle on both sides but the Falcons held on to capture their 17th region title in school history, a third consecutive crown for Cox (20-2), while P.A. dropped to 16-3.
The work is not done yet for either school as the state tournament begins next week. On Thursday, Cox, seeking a state record 16th state title, will play the Northwest Region runner-up, either North Stafford or Mountain View, at 1pm, while Princess Anne, aiming for a fourth state title in school history, will face the Northwest winner at 3pm.
The semifinals are scheduled for next Friday, November 14, at 1 and 3pm. The state championship will take place next Saturday, November 15 at 1pm.
The state tournament will be held at the U.S. National Training Center next to the SportsPlex in Virginia Beach.
