Eastern Region field hockey quarterfinals
The road to the state field hockey championship continues this week at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach and after Tuesday's quarterfinal round, four familiar powers are in the semifinals.
Two-time defending state champion Cox Falcons had its hands full against Peninsula power Gloucester. After Taylor Rhea scored to give Cox an early 1-0 lead, Brittany Byrd snuck in the equalizer to tie the game at 1-1, only to have the Falcons score late in the opening half for a 2-1 halftime lead.
Cox added two more in the final 30 minutes to secure victory courtesy of Rhea and Casey Dinardo which added up to a 4-1 win as the Beach power improves to 18-2 while the Dukes season comes to an end at 14-3-1.
Eastern District champion Maury scored all four of its goals in the opening half in pitching a 4-0 shutout of Western Branch, making its first region appearance in nine years.
Princess Anne scored four goals in the first half and five more in the second half in posting a 9-3 defeat of Peninsula champ Kecoughtan. The Cavaliers move their overall record to 15-2 while the Warriors finish at 15-4.
Speaking of cavaliers, as in Lakeland, the Southeastern champion Cavaliers scored four in the opening half enroute to a 7-0 drubbing of Granby. Lakeland improves to 17-2 while the Comets season ends at 8-9.
Thursday's semifinals look like this::
-Lakeland vs. Princess Anne at 1pm
-Cox vs. Maury at 3pm
Both games will also be played at the National Training Center next to the Virginia Beach SportsPlex, where the state field hockey tournament takes place November 13-15.
