Eastern Region football playoffs- week one wrap

The first week of Division 5 and Division 6 playoffs is in the books. The top four undefeated schools are still unbeaten and still in postseason contention, while a familiar face reached a milestone while coaching his team to victory.

While the likes of Ocean Lakes, Oscar Smith, Phoebus and Lake Taylor have been grabbing headlines since the kickoff of the season, the Hampton Crabbers have been quietly moving along in their quest for another state crown.
On a rainy Saturday afternoon, coach Mike Smith's Crabbers went to the ground game and it worked to perfection, due in large part to their star rusher, Tron Martinez.
Despite nursing a bruised left shoulder, Martinez ran all over Indian River's defense on the slippery and sloppy field at Darling Stadium to the tune of 213 yards and two touchdowns leading Hampton to a 35-0 shutout of the Braves, giving Smith his 400th career coaching win.
Martinez started the scoring in the second quarter as he ran to his right side and coasted into the end zone on a ten yard score on fourth down to give Hampton the 7-0 lead.
Hampton extended their advantage later in the half as Martinez got the ball and he took off past the entire Indian River defense 88 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-0 at halftime.
Hampton added three second half touchdowns to put the game away. As a team, the Crabbers rushed for 349 yards on the ground while the defense held the Braves to 131 yards of total offense, less than half their average.
Hampton improving its season mark to 10-1, but there will be little time to celebrate the milestone for Smith and the Crabbers. Now they must prepare for the undefeated Titans of Lake Taylor (11-0) next Friday in Norfolk.
Speaking of the Eastern District champions, the Titans scored a pair of fourth quarter TD's in a 24-17 win over Warwick, Lake Taylor's first playoff win since 1982.
Defending Division 5 region champion Phoebus had no problem disposing of Churchland at Darling Stadium, 63-6. The Phantoms got 234 yards and two TD's from Shawne Alston to stay perfect at 11-0.
Ocean Lakes scored 17 first half points holding off district rival Salem 17-0 to also stay unbeaten at 11-0.
Perry Jones rushed for a career best 361 yards and three touchdowns as Oscar Smith also goes to 11-0 in a 34-17 win over Woodside.
In other action, six turnovers did in Western Branch in a 21-7 loss to Bethel, Kellam came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat Cox, 27-18 and Green Run scored 28 second half points in a 49-17 rout of Grassfield as Jeraud Simmons tossed five touchdowns.
