State field hockey championships
The 2008 VHSL state field hockey championship will be most remembered for the dreary weather during the course of the tournament but most of all, yet another state title for the Cox Falcons as well as a state champ from the Bay Rivers District.
Cox battled Princess Anne on Saturday at the U.S. National Training Center in Virginia Beach in the Group AAA final, the fifth time these two Beach powers have met this season with the Falcons holding a 3-1 season series edge.
It was also the eighth time since 1990 that two Beach District teams have battled for the state crown.
The Falcons scored three goals to beat the Cavaliers, 3-0 for their third straight state championship, their 16th state title in school history. This year's Falcons were led by a talented group of players during the course of the season and postseason, including Meredith Corner, Taylor Rhea, Kelsey Rosenmeier, Stephanie DeMasi and Cara Witte.
Cox finishes the season at 22-3 while Princess Anne ends its season at 18-4.
In the Group A/AA final held earlier at the training center, the Tabb Tigers had to go to double overtime as Colleen Patterson's goal lifted the Bay Rivers champs to a hard fought 3-2 win over James Monroe.
It is the second state title for Tabb and first since 2000 as the Tigers complete a perfect season at 24-0.
