State field hockey quarterfinals

It was a day more fit for ducks than a field hockey tournament. But the quarterfinal round of state field hockey in Virginia Beach was completed despite the heavy rains as both Beach schools advance to Friday's semifinals.

Defending two-time state champion Cox got a hat trick, three goals from junior forward Cara Witte, as the Falcons blank North Stafford from the Northern Region, 3-0 on Thursday.
It took a while during a steady rain but Cox drew first blood late in the opening half as Witte's shot went off a North Stafford defender with just over a minute to go to give Cox a 1-0 halftime lead.
Witte extended her team's lead midway in the second half as her shot eluded the North Stafford goalie to make it a 2-0 game.
Witte completed the hat trick with just over three minutes to go in the game to make the final score 3-0.
Cox outbattled and outhustled their opponents all game long despite the dreary conditions as they improve their season mark to 21-2 and will face Westfield, a 2-0 quarterfinal winner over Thomas Dale, in Friday's 1pm state semifinal.
The second set of quarterfinals were plagued by a series of downpours, in fact, play was suspended late in the first half with both fields at the National Training Center wet and waterlogged.
But the rains left up enough for the other two quarterfinals to be completed. The other Beach District entry, Princess Anne, got an early goal from Amy Abernathy as the Cavaliers blank Mountain View, 1-0, to advance to Friday's semifinal at 3pm. Both Group AAA semifinals will take place on Field 1 at the U.S. National Training Center in Virginia Beach.
Also, in the Group A/AA bracket, region 1 champion Tabb from the Bay Rivers District will face Orange County in a 1pm state semifinal on Field 2 at the training center.
