State field hockey semifinals
Once again, rain played a factor in Friday's state field hockey semifinals at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach. And just like Thursday, both Beach schools won and will face each other again, for a fifth time, this time for the state title on Saturday.
In the first semifinal, two-time defending state champion Cox rolled to a 4-0 shutout of Westfield. Four Falcons scored starting with Kelsey Rosenmeier, who converted a Meredith Corner feed midway in the opening half for a 1-0 lead.
Corner extended the Falcon lead to 2-0 six minutes into the second half off a rebound of her own earlier shot on goal.
Carly Atchison made it 3-0 off a feed from Cara Witte nine minutes later and Stephanie DeMasi capped off the Cox win scoring off a penalty corner pass from Taylor Rhea.
Cox outshot Westfield 14-5 and held an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Cox improves its record to 22-2.
In the second semifinal, for a second straight day, Princess Anne had to survive a heavy rain storm, a delay due to a waterlogged field again and a tough opponent to earn a hard fought 1-0 semifinal win.
Maartje van Rijswijk scored the only goal the Cavaliers would eventually need for victory. P.A. held a huge edge on shots and penalty corners but not convert on their chances, especially in the first half.
Despite that, the Cavaliers defense held their own for the win. Play was suspended with 9:28 to play in the game but the game did get completed as P.A. improves its record to 18-3.
This sets up an all-Beach District matchup in the state championship game in Group AAA set for 1pm Saturday at the National Training Center. It will be the fifth meeting between the Beach field hockey powers with the Falcons holding a 3-1 series advantage this season.
This will mark the eighth time since 1990 that twwo Beach schools will battle for the state title. P.A. scored a 1-0 win over Cox back in 2004, the last time the Cavaliers won the championship, their third in school history.
The Falcons will be aiming for its 16th overall state championship in field hockey.
Meanwhile, in the Group A/AA semifinals also at the National Training Center, Bay Rivers champion Tabb scored a 1-0 state semifinal win over Orange County.
Erika Euker scored the game's only goal five and half minutes into the game to help the Tigers move to 23-0 on the season and will face either Western Albemarle or James Monroe in the state title game at 1030am Saturday morning at the training center.
