State football semifinals
On Saturday, three area football powers stood on the verge of a shot at a state football title. Those three schools are still in the running as they each face one final challenge, the state championship game next Saturday.
In Division 5, the undefeated Phoebus Phantoms had payback on their minds in their state semifinal rematch against defending state champ Stone Bridge before a packed house at Darling Stadium in Hampton.
The Bulldogs sported a 26 game win streak going in, which included a win over Phoebus in last year's semifinals on their way to the state crown.
From the opening kickoff on Saturday, Phoebus let their opponents know who was in charge. On the opening play from scrimmage, Stone Bridge quarterback Patrick Thompson was sacked by the Phantoms' DaQuan Romero, Thompson lost the ball and the ball was scooped up by Demetrius Ward, who ran 26 yards for the touchdown giving Phoebus the early 7-0 lead.
Phoebus added to their lead in the second quarter, thanks to the power running of Shawne Alston, who ran for 167 yards and a pair of scores from three yards and 43 yards giving Phoebus a 24-0 halftime cushion.
Although the Bulldogs scored to cut the Phantoms' lead to 24-8, the defense turned the game back into Phoebus' favor as Colby Goodwin picked off a Thompson pass on their next possession, setting up a 22 yard scoring strike from Tajh Boyd to Romero to make it a 31-8 lead.
And it was appropriate the Phoebus defense would end the scoring after starting the scoring as LoVante Battle returned an interception 35 yards to close out a 38-8 beating of Stone Bridge which keeps Phoebus unbeaten at 14-0 and sends them to next Saturday's D5 state championship against Dinwiddie at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg. Kickoff set for noon.
In Division 6, undefeated Oscar Smith had a battle on their hands traveling to Vienna in Northern Virginia to face fellow unbeaten Oakton.
Down 7-0 in the third quarter, the Tigers responded as quarterback Phillip Sims conencted with star receiver Tim Smith for the eight yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.
Sims passed for 243 yards, while UVA-bound Smith caught eight passes for 140 yards.
This would set the stage for a dramatic finish. Sims completed three key passes on their game winning drive including a 47 yarder to Smith which put Oscar Smith at the Oakton five yard line.
On fourth and goal at the seven, the call went out for kicker Ryan Trotman and with 1:27 to play in regulation, Trotman made perhaps the biggest kick of his career, a 23 yard field goal, giving the Tigers a 10-7 lead. Then, the defense shut down Oakton to preserve the win, which sends 14-0 Oscar Smith to next Saturday's D6 state championship against Northwest champion Osbourn, also at Lane Stadium with kickoff set for 4:07 p.m.
In Division 1, the 10-2 Franklin Broncos played host to William Campbell in a rematch of a 2004 state semifinal that Campbell won.
Broncos quarterback Donzell Shearin had a pair of first half touchdown runs, the game was tied at 14-14 at the break.
In the second half, the visiting Generals took a 21-14 lead which set the stage for Franklin's game winning drive. Shearin tossed a 70 yard touchdown to Derrick Thompson to put them within a point, 21-20, and then, Elliott Bottoms scored the two-point conversion, which proved to be the difference as Franklin advances to the D1 state championship with a hard-fought 22-21 win over William Campbell.
The Broncos improve to 11-2 and will look for its second state title in school history when they take on Clintwood next Saturday at Salem City Stadium with a noon kickoff.
