Ira Cronin | Thrills, surprises and controversy

Week three of the high school football season was a doozey to say the least! We just wrapped up our HS GameTime show that was full of surprises, thrills, stunning victories, bitter defeats, and controversy.
How cool was it when we showed the video of the Butler receiver Jarrett Boykin raising his index finger to the sky as he scored his second touchdown of the night? Boykin was ejected for taunting, which includes an automatic suspension for next week’s game. Observer prep writer Langston Wertz says the officials thought Boykin was raising his middle finger, which our video clearly shows was not the case.
During the show, Butler head coach Mike Newsom called Langston after seeing our highlights (Yes, we do bring you the highlights first at 11:15 p.m.) and said he was going to appeal the call to N.C. high school officials in Raleigh to try and get Boykin back on the field next week. By the way, it was a big win for Butler, 47-0.
Our game of the week was a true rivalry game between Maiden and Lincolnton. If you missed our show, make sure to pull up the video on the HS Game Time Web site to hear Maiden Head Coach Tom Brown’s pre-game speech. Even if you have never suited up for a down of football, you’ll be ready to play! I know I was, and still am as I write this. Great win for Maiden 26-22, and you know it was a bitter loss for Scott Cloninger and his Wolves.
Congratulations to Chris Norman and his Golden Lions who won a hard fought 14-7 game against the Green Wave of Ashbrook. Major props go out to Bob Whitman and Country Day for a hard fought win at home over Charlotte Catholic, 14-6. Country leads the John Cook Cup series 12-10.
Independence plays Saturday night to go along with a great line up of college football openers… Stay Tuned.
