Greg Bailey | Why HS Football on Wednesday?

We know it's not ideal. And we know that the last thing some area coaches want to do is play Wednesday only to turn around and play again on Friday night.
But area officials didn't have much of a choice. Local schools are the ones who decide whether to play on soggy fields. Once that call is made you have to move to games to next week so you don't tear up the fields too badly. At first, officials said Monday. But then they realized that playing "major" sporting events on a holiday (the Jewish high holiday Rosh Hashanah) violates policy. That's how we ended up with Wednesday high school football for some local schools.
The rules don't always make it fun, but they are rules for a reason.
After some debate we decided that playing football in the rain and the mud is fun for two reasons:
1) You win and can laugh about it in the locker room.
2) Someone else is playing.
Our crews described water and mud up to their knees in some parts of the Carolinas on Friday night. That's not fun for anyone, but it does make for some great highlights.
Again, I get to describe the highlights of someone else playing on the lousy conditions.
Hats off to Charlotte Catholic's offensive line. We featured them Friday at 6 and they delivered by pounding out a win over Olympic. I saw plenty of blocks that continued 10 and 15 yards down field. That's impressive and worthy of mention.
