Area's 5A ground attack is drastically down

Rushing stats are way down this year in class 5A for the area. In 5A for the Houston area no one has a shot at 2000 yards barring a 400 yard game, and in fact only one running back has over 1500 yards. Passing only has one passer over 2000 yards and won't come close to approaching the 2850 yards passed for by Cotton Turner last year in the regular season. Last year Sam McGuffie rushed for 2308 yards in the regular season, leading rusher in 5A has 1501 yards this year and has an outside shot at 2000 yards.

So why are the numbers down so drastically? Rushing is not hard to explain, Sam McGuffie's junior season was freakish and this year he has been hurt. It will be a while before someone else touches 2300 yards in the regular season. There are a lot of good backs in the area but they are also on good teams which means little playing time in the 4th quarter. Passing will likely have at least two quarterbacks topping 2000 with three others have a chance. Once again Cotton's numbers were freakish and out of the norm. Still it is weird to see such a drop off from last year to this year's numbers in passing and rushing.

Recruiting is heating up for the seniors and now the juniors. I know that recruiting season is officially beginning and football season winding down when I get calls from colleges asking who are some of the top players in the area who might not have been well known before the season but are having standout years. Here are some worth mentioning

Brazoswood's Yobes Walker is the number one name that myself and my staff have mentioned. He has had a great year and deserves some serious looks by the colleges.

Cy Fair's Wesley Cobb, yes he is overshadowed but he looked good on national television.

Cy Falls' Shane Turner and Darius Bolden- both have had huge years and should start reaping some serious benefits from their hard work. Of course you also have Xavier Witchett.

Klein Oak's- Terrence Robinson has to be a top player that people knew about but did not think he was this good.

Klein Oak's Alex Mirenda, he has the size to play college ball but the defenders on this team get overlooked because of the man crushes that scouts have on Hales and Robinson.

Conroe's Mookie Lewis- great athlete who has had some big games

Bo Walker from Westfield also can't be forgotten, he plays big all the time.

David Nwaibuisi from Bellaire Episcopal looks good as a fullback and a linebacker

Langham Creek's Max Jenkins and Coretez Paige.

Cy Springs' Troy Randle, The Woodlands Tracy Milo, College Park's D'Jeale Lyons, College Parks Travis Keating, Aldine Nimitz's Wilimaron Mosquera and Thaddeus Wesley.

There are a lot more good players out there that have had big senior seasons, actually too many to mention. Great job by all of them for putting in the hard work.

SOME TEAMS WHO HAVE CLINCHED A PLAYOFF SPOT IN 5A: Pearland, Clements, Pasadena Memorial, North Shore, Deer Park, Humble, West Brook, Lamar, Katy, Cy Ridge, Klein Oak, Westfield and Lufkin.

4A: Yates

Congrats to all
