Football Playoffs: Round 2 wrap up
The cardiac kids strike again: Clements High School's team has been playing an enchanted season this year. They keep having to make big comebacks to win games, and they do it every week. This week they beat West Brook in spectacular fashion. Not to leave anyone out but players like Walker Dille, Matt Herzinger, Derek Carr, Chris Lenoir and many others keep coming up with huge plays at clutch moments. It is like they play, "it is your turn", on making the huge plays. This team has some big mojo with it and they believe they can come back from any defecit.
I saw a team like this once, week after week they would destroy 21 point fourth quarter leads by their opponent. In the end it was a big shootout as their star quarterback played on after a bad ankle injury in the first quarter. With a 2-3 td defecit the quarterback goes to his huddle, tells his teammates "let's win this one". They then go on and destroy the opposing team. That team was Lufkin and the quarterback was Reggie McNeal. This team has that feel about it. Yes, they might not have the most talent, they might not be the biggest, fastest, or have the most prospects, but they just win.
LUMBERTON, I would like to read John Cleese's apology to Kevin Kline in "A fish called Wanda", for ever doubting them. The big win over La Marque shows that they are not a fluke team but a team that is playing great ball and deserves consideration as a real possible regional champ and more. They have a great senior class and some players performing at the top of their game right now.
Cy Falls vs Stratford: Though it did live up to it's build up as a shoot out, I thought it surpassed what everyone thought it could be. One person in the press box predicted 60 points and 600 yards, I predicted 80 points and 800 yards, I was closer. Andrew Luck is unstoppable when he rolls and is just a tough as nails quarterback. Also, he has to be one of the most unselfish, nice guys around. He is quick to praise his opponents and teammates. Andrew, it has been a pleasure to watch you play these past four seasons, good luck the rest of the way.
Eisenhower vs Cy Ridge- another great game that finished with Guiton falling one yard short of victory. There have been some great barn burners this year and this one will go down as a great one. Eisenhower exceeded expectations and they will be a top 5 area team next year, a lot of their top talent are juniors. Cy Ridge will be a top 5 team with Russell Shepard being our # 1 player in the state and a top 10 player in the nation for Scout.com.
Katy High School: I will be shocked if they don't win state this year, this team has been great all year long and they are playing at the top of their game right now. They have some tough games ahead but they have been there and done that.
Waller vs Yates: YAtes struggled in the first quarter and that was their doom on this day. However I want to talk about Coach Phillips and his offensive staff. What was great about this game was the great play calling and near flawless game plan they had on this day. They used several different backs to keep Yates guessing and when Yates was a bit tired they ran Eddie Brown, who plays defensive tackle, at fullback and played smash em up football. Yates has a quick, very aggressive defense and Waller did a reverse to start the game, that puts Yates back a bit. Then, knowing they can't beat Yates to the corners they kept the ball going between the tackles. Of course a pass hear and there, and every now and then try the outside to keep the defense honest.
Folks, there is some great football being played in the area right now, if you have not made a game you need to do so because these games are going down as classics.
