Friendswood falls in state finals

During some technical difficulty on the blog, Midway finished off the 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 sweep of Friendswood in the 4A state title match.

The Mustangs struggled all day getting past the Midway block and, on the other hand, slowing down Midway's powerful Jordan Rice.

Jessie Hays had 11 kills, Whitney Rhoden had 8, Christie Dorch added 7 and Charlotte Mata had 6. Jenny Brekke had 28 assists and Branna O'Neill had 11 digs.

Cy-Fair vs. Amarillo stats

Nneka Ogwumike led Cy-Fair with 16 kills and Cambrey Oehler had 8 kills and 12 digs. Lacey Hayes had 27 assists.

Ashley Pylant led Amarillo with 10 kills and Brianne Barker had 35 assists for Amarillo.

Cy-Fair's season ends

Amarilllo pours it on down the stretch and back to back aces by Breanne Owens closes out game three 25-15 with the defending champions advancing to the state finals where they will meet Westlake.

Cy-Fair put up a battle but Amarillo played like the #3 team in the nation and were not going to be stopped.

Pylant puts Amarillo up 12-8 but a net serve pulls Cy-Fair within 12-9 and Oehler delivers again for Cy-Fair. A back row shot off Nneka and a lift put Amarillo up 14-10. Cy-Fair needs to settle down or it's going to get out of hand. Nneka gets a soft mis-direct to fall and then Nneka puts away an overpass and suddenly it's 14-12 Amarillo.

Brianne Barker stuffs Chiney and it's tied 7-7. A lift gives Amarillo the lead but Chiney responds with a blast for Cy-Fair and Amarillo takes the lead 9-8 on a Barker dump. Cy-Fair can't chase down an Amarillo shot and it's 10-8 Amarillo. Time out Cy-Fair.

Nneka mis-times a shot but it drops and we're tied at 3-3. Cy-Fair takes an early lead on an Amarillo hitting error and an ace by Nneka puts Cy-Fair up 5-3. Chiney and Allicia Garza block Black and it's 6-3.

Amarillo is wearing out the right side and it's tied 22-22. Time out Cy-Fair, which had a 22-20 lead but just missed the line to that would have put them up 23-20.

Cy-Fair is struggling to slow down the right side attack, but Amarillo has made a couple of hitting errors to put Cy-Fair up. Ashley Vanderhey's serve tips the net and falls over for an ace and Cambrey Oehler drops in a nice shot to give Cy-Fair a 22-21 lead.

OK, we're about ready for the feature match of the day -- the rematch of the terrific Pearland semifinal battle between defending 5A champion Amarillo and Cy-Fair.

Amarillo has lost only twice in two years but Cy-Fair had them on the ropes before falling at the Pearland tournament. Cy-Fair look loose.

Columbus falls in three

Columbus put up a tremendous fight but in the end defending champion Wimberley had way too many weapons and are back in the state finals after taking game three 27-25.

The loss overshadowed a tremendous effort by Elsie Huskey who was a one-woman wrecking crew for Columbus.

Wimberley now faces Monahans for the 3A championship. We'll have stat leaders shortly.

Columbus pulled within 21-19 but three errors spaced around kills by Lauren Tuttle and Katie Milam give Wimberley game two 25-20. Right now Elise Huskey is providing almost all of the Columbus offense. Wimberley leads 2-0.

Wimberley has way too much Lacy Lea, Lauren Tuttle and Megan Buse and they have onloaded on Columbus from all angles over the last few minutes, giving Wimberley a 19-11 lead. Columbus coach Rhonda Magness calls time out to try to stop the bleeding.

After Kim Smidovec's block pulled Columbus within 7-6, Wimberley has responded with a 7-2 run and leads 13-8. Caroline Gliterho blocks Wimberley and a Wimberley lift has Columbus back in it at 13-10.

After Kailey Powell pulled Columbus even at 21-21 with an ace, three Columbus errors spaced around a Magen Buse kill gives Wimberley game one 25-21. Errors - hitting and passing - were Columbus' downfall in game one.

Wimberley is spreading its offense around and has extended its lead to 21-18 despite big blasts by Elise Husky and Mandy Moeller for Columbus. Moeller just pulled columbus within 21-19 with a block and after a Wimberley shot sails wide, Columbus is within 21-20 and Wimberley calls time out.

With Wimberley just 30 minutes away, it's like playing front of a Lady Texan home crowd. There are a lot of Wimberley fans here and they are loud.<
