Big week ahead for Houston's top team

Last week was a good one for Houston's top teams as the four ranked in LoneStarVolleyball's Top 20 all rolled on despite -- in one case -- having to double up on matches to make up for lost time due to Hurricane Ike.

In fact, Houston's top-ranked team, Clear Creek, played Galveston Ball twice in one night last week and won both by an average score of 25-7. Madeline Gaffney, Megan Pendergast and Haley Jacobs also led sweeps of Clear Brook and Clear Springs as Creek improved to 30-4.

Right on Clear Creek's heels is Pearland, which rode two strong matches by Jasmine Terry to wins over Sam Rayburn and Pasadena.

Among the other LSVB Top 20 Houston teams, Daniella Arenas had back-to-back 12 kill matches as Cy Woods swept Cy Creek and Jersey Village while Katie Messing, Brittney Rhude and Brittney Rhude were unstoppable for The Woodlands in sweeps of New Caney and Lufkin in which they allowed over 9 points in only one set.

This week will be a big one for Clear Creek, with a very talented Dickinson team on the schedule tonight and Clear Springs at home on Friday.

Also tonight, The Woodlands will face a tough challenge from College Park while Cy Woods will have its hands full with a dangerous Cy Creek team.

Unlike recent years, this season is providing enough good district match-ups to keep things interesting around the state. Last week started with Churchill taking down New Braunfels and ended with Round Rock and Richardson Pearce fighting back challenges from rivals Westwood and Highland Park.

This week promises even more action starting tonight with Coppell vs. Southlake Carroll. Way out west, there is also an interesting showdown tonight between 1-4A arch rivals Burges, ranked #3 in the city by the El Paso Times, and El Paso High, ranked #4.

The action heats up on Wednesday when top-ranked O'Connor faces a dangerous Clark team. And on Friday, #2 Reagan squares off with a big and talented New Braunfels squad.

There's more discussion on LoneStarVolleyball.com.

Here is this week's ranking of the 20 best teams in Texas, and more teams to keep and eye on.
