Finally! Things start to get interesting again this week. The dog days of district end on Tuesday night and that means we have a weekend ahead with some terrific warm-up matches, especially involving Houston teams, followed by the start of the playoffs.
We're not going to go into a lot of detail on the Top 20 this week, mainly because very little of note happened last week. The LoneStarVolleyball.com Top 20 teams played a total of 35 matches last week and 32 were sweeps. The other three matches went only four games.
Clear Creek continues to hold the highest ranking among Houston teams at #5 and four teams among the top 11 ranked teams.
There were some outstanding individual perfomances last week in matches involving the top teams:
- Nancy Cole had 54 kills in Pasadena Memorial wins over South Houston and La Porte.
- Chiney Ogwumike also had 38 kills total for Cy-Fair against Cy Woods and Cy Creek.
- Megan Pendegast had 34 kills total in Clear Creek's wins over Alvin and Brazoswood.
- Allyson Judkins had 23 kills in Jersey Village's loss to Cy Creek.
- Ashley Vrana had 22 kills in Cy Creek's win over Jersey Village.
Note of the week comes from west Texas where Amarillo and Tascosa, the state's premier rivalry, once again packed in over 1,800 rowdy fans. And they saw the two-time defending state champion Sandies add to their string of consecutive district titles that dates back to 1998. Also out west, Bushland head coach Makesha Maupin picked up her 100th career win and the defending state champion Falcons swept River Road to win their fourth district title in four years of varsity play. It was the final regular season home match for Bushland and at match point, Maupin put senior Lisa Adams into the lineup to serve the final point in her last match. Adams had injured a knee during a scrimmage at the beginning of the season, sending her to the sidelines for her senior year.
"We knew that if we played good enough that we could let Lisa come in and serve," Bushland's Kirsten Beasley told the Amarillo Globe News. "That meant a lot to her. We wanted to give her a chance to step on the court one last time."
So, with that feel good note, let's take a look at how the table is set as we prepare for this weekend's warm-up appetizers and next week's feast of playoff action.
