Houston volleyball teams come back strong
Most of the top teams in Houston have returned to action now and there certainly didn't seem to be much rust after the Hurricane Ike-forced layoff.
Although most of the teams find themselves playing three matches a week in order to get caught up, Clear Creek, Pearland, Cy Woods and the The Woodlands all came back as strong as ever. All had no trouble winning their matches last week and, as a side note, Pearland's three wins gave coach John Turner his 500th career victory.
Around the state, San Antonio remains the epicenter of the high school volleyball universe and last week we had another showdown of state powers when then #2 Churchill faced #3 Reagan in second round of district play. A few weeks ago Churchill had swept Reagan, just days after Reagan had rolled to the championship of the Pearland Nike Classic.
This time it was all Reagan as the Rattlers took down Churchill in four.
This week there are a number of big matches around the state and one of the biggest will be in the Houston area on Wednesday night when Magnolia and Brenham square off. These are probably the two best 4A teams in the Houston area and among the two best in the state. Because of the need to catch up from missed matches, these teams will actually meet twice over the next two weeks.
Four Houston area teams are in this week's LoneStarVolleyball Texas Top 20 and three are in the Top 10. Here is this week's ranking of the 20 best teams in Texas. (You can read what we have to say about each team on LoneStarVolleyball.com)
