Clear Creek looks to bring gold back to Houston
It's been eight years since a Houston 5A school has won a state title, but this could be the year that streak is broken.
Clear Creek, at 41-4, has the firepower and ball control to do it, especially in a year when there are no major powerhouses.
The Wildcats try to take the first step tonight at 5 p.m. in a semifinal matchup with Amarillo. Amarillo is the two-time defending champ and has won more 5A state titles than any other Texas team, but Clear Creek beat the Sandies at Pearland earlier this year and they have a lot of confidence.
"I would have to say the Amarillo win at Pearland was a big turning point," said Clear Creek coach Scott Simonds as he prepared his team for tonight's rematch. "We set some extremely high goals for this group this season including breaking our all time record for season wins (36 set in 2002), winning district for the sixth time in eight years, and getting to the state tournament for the first time since 1995. We have achieved all of those goals and I couldn't possibly be prouder of this group. They have worked extremely hard to achieve their goals and they always believed they could do it. Now that we've made it to state, we will now focus on winning a state championship."
We'll be blogging live from the semifinal match as well as providing ongoing coverage from San Marcos throughout the weekend.
