Two wins from San Marcos

Three months after they first hit the gym for two-a-day workouts, a handful of Houston teams find themselves just two wins away from a berth in the state tournament. And by Saturday night, at least one will be packing their bags for San Marcos.

The action begins tonight with the 5A Region 3 tournament at Campbell Center, the Region 2 tournament at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville and the 4A Region 3 tournament at Coleman Coliseum.

The overall 5A favorite from Houston is Clear Creek, sporting a 40-4 record, a #3 state ranking and loaded with firepower, great setting and one of the state's best back row players. Clear Creek meets Stratford, a team that has quietly put together a terrific season, in the second Region 3 semifinal tonight at the Campbell Center. In the opener, Katy faces Fort Bend Travis. The championship match is 4 p.m. Saturday.

In the Region 2 tournament at Sam Houston State, Cy Woods is carrying the Houston banner and they take a #7 state ranking and 36-4 record into their 8 p.m. showdown with #10 Lake Highlands, a team that was ranked #1 in the state at one point this season. This is the deepest of the four 5A regional tournaments around the state. The first semifinal features A&M Consolidated against #8 Round Rock. The championship is set for 6 p.m. Saturday and should be a war.

There is a very good chance that Houston will also have a state tournament representative at the 4A level, where Region 3 should come down to one more showdown between district rivals Magnolia and Brenham. In semifinal action tonight at Coleman Coliseum, Brenham's big and powerful front line should have no trouble eliminating El Campo. The 8 p.m. match features Magnolia's explosive offense up against perennial state power Friendswood, coming off two straight trips to the state tournament. The championship, which should feature Magnolia and Brenham one more time, is set for 4 p.m.
