Here's one I don't get: Jesuit qualified, according to the LHSAA Web site this morning, as the District 10 champion. But Brother Martin is a better seed.
It all comes down to power points, which when you're playing a one-and-done playoff format, kind of stinks. A team that has one good pitcher can cruise through the playoffs.
In Alabama, every round is best-of-3. That's the way it should be. The best team moves on in that case.
Mark Cuban let fly with criticism of his team following its loss to Oklahoma City - one of the league's worst teams, who was also missing its top two scorers. Cuban threatened to turn over the entire roster, if necessary. Hopefully, this won't awaken the sleeping giant against the Hornets Thursday. Every time the Hornets appear to be on a bit of a roll, they've tended to turn
Just a refresher here, folks.

Bastrop's standout receiver/quarterback Reuben Randle remains undecided about where he'll play college football, the Monroe News-Star wrote Tuesday.
That's big for LSU, which is still the running despite Randle's visit to Alabama this past weekend.

The first-ever Sportsman's Paradise Bowl - an all-star game pitting high school seniors from Louisiana against each other - ended with a bang for LSU.
Michael Ford, an LSU commit, earned the game's offensive MVP by finishing with nearly 100 yards of total offense and scoring two touchdowns.

The first basketball polls of the season are out and 17 area schools found their way into the rankings.
In boys, South Lafourche (No. 4), Thibodaux (No. 7) and St. Augustine (No. 8) are ranked in 5A; O.P Walker (No. 6), Franklinton (No. 7) and Salmen (No. 9) are in the 4A poll; No. 8 Lutcher and No. 9 Amite come in in the 3A poll; Country Day is No. 2 in the 1A poll; and Reserve Christian holds down the top spot in the Class C rankings
I know I'm late on this, but it seemingly slipped through the cracks during a busy holiday season.
Former Jesuit head coach Sid Edwards earned Class 5A Coach of the Year honors after leading Central-Baton Rouge to a long run in the playoffs. No one expected it and Edwards more than earned it.

South Plaquemines coach Cyril Crutchfield said on Monday that he has scheduled a game in Week 4 against John Curtis. Better yet, the game is supposed to be in Port Sulphur.
I'll tell you one guy who will be at that - me.

We've come to our final week of pick 'em.
I've had many return customers. Let's hope they remain for this last gasp of football for the year.
Five games. Five teams can win. One pick 'em player can get lunch on me.
Who is it going to be?
OK, I apologize for missing last week. Thanksgiving. Saints. The occasional hiccup of memory. You get the point. I won't let you down again.
We're going to pick all 10 semifinal games this week, so get your thinking cap on. Some will be difficult (re: St. James vs. Evangel). Some will be easy (re: South Plaquemines vs. whoever).
So away we go...

OK, so your fearless leader fell off the map last week. I was trapped at the Pontchartrain Center, covering volleyball.
And by trapped, I don't mean it in a bad way. But my mind lost track of pick 'em and, well, I forgot to pick the game myself.
But several others didn't, so kudos to you.

Ehret senior linebacker Lamin Barrow and HSGametime.com will work together this fall to bring you and inside look at what a player goes through during the season. Barrow, the No. 7 player in the state according to HSGametime.com, will try to help guide the Patriots to the Class 5A state finals a year after advancing to the semifinals. Barrow is being recruited by Kansas State, Ole Miss and other Football Bowl Subdivision schools.
St. Joseph has more state titles than you can count - think of them as the John Curtis of state volleyball. Meanwhile, Fontainebleau had never reached the finals, but don't expect this year to be a one-time affair. Armed with talented freshmen and sophomores, the Bulldogs gave St. Joe's all they wanted in three of the four games, falling 24-26, 25-21, 25-10, 25-22. Two of Fontainebleau's three seniors were visibly upset after the game, sobbi
Charged by their animated coach Greg Castillo to 'make memories,' the Cabrini Crescents did just that, taking charge with a dominant 25-8 first game and going on to beat Sam Houston in the most lopsided of the day's finals in the Division II championship.
The win provided the Crescents with back to back titles, something Castillo said he'd been putting in their minds since the day they won their title last year. "We were on a missio
Always the bridesmaid never the bride was erased from memory as E.D. White beat Sacred Heart 3-1 (25-17, 25-11, 23-25, 25-15). White was crowned champs of District III, as a previous runner-up five times before finally winning it all this time.
Anchored by a dominating performance by Kathryn Stock, who led her side in kills, 21, blocks, 15, and aces 9, and won the Most Valuable Player, E. D. White commanded most of the match,
Louise S. McGehee outlasted John Curtis, winning 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 28-26, 25-24) and taking home the District IV state title.
Junior Sam Tillery led the way with 28 kills and was awarded the honor of Most Valuable Player, as Mattie Cannon and Kendall Fritchie played key roles with 21 and 20 aces respectively.

It's playoff time in high school football. You know. You've read all about it.

We've hit the final week of the regular season, but that doesn't mean we're done here at pick 'em. I'll compile a list of regular season statistics in regard to pick 'em after this week, but we here at HSGametime.com will continue through the state championship games.
That said, I went 5-5 this past week...and that was the best. It was a tough week, one with upsets and close games. The WWL-TV sports producers went 4-6, as did Chad Bowe
Playing 2-6 teams is never good for power ratings, but for Destrehan, the game against East Ascension was a must. The two are district rivals. But those Spartans from East Ascension helped drop Destrehan from No. 1 to No. 2 in the latest power ratings, compiled on kenramsey.com.
As for St. James, those guys fell only one spot after a tough home loss to Curtis. The Wildcats lost 17-14, but I think
You always like recognition. And when it comes from national organizations like Rivals.com or MaxPreps.com, you're not going to turn it down.
But I can't imagine why the national rankings for Louisiana schools are so different.
Does one rely on program history more than actual on-field prowess? Does one rely on coaches who send information in and the other holds that against the schools?
I don't have the answers to thi
We had such a nice group of contestants at the beginning of the year.
Where have all of y'all gone? I mean, apparently lunch with me isn't enough of an incentive.
But we've got two weeks left in the regular season. Let's get back into the pick 'em spirit.

I know I've waxed poetic about how Destrehan hasn't been No. 1 pretty much in any poll.
Well, I've been rewarded and so have the Wildcats. After they picked up their 22nd consecutive win to move to 7-0 this season, Destrehan is No. 1 in the latest power ratings. The Wildcats are tied with last week's No. 1 West Monroe.
But both have Brother Martin nipping at their heels. The Crusaders play a St. Aug team Friday that they should

Last week wasn't a good week for many of our pickers. Only Professor and Chad Bower came out strong, finishing 8-2. No one else was above 6-4.
But there are a slew of games this week to choose from to get back on track.

Is it possible to get any real joy out of national prep rankings? Can you really puff out your chest and talk about how good you are when the people who vote at Rivals.com show they're not keen to what's going on?
I'll get to all this in a second.
But first, the rankings.
(Click for national rankings)
I'm still flabbergasted that Destrehan isn't No. 1. I don't vote. Wasn't asked to as I'm not a member of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
But I'll tell you what I think and that the fact the Wildcats aren't No. 1 is mind-blowing. This is a team that won 15 straight a year ago and is 6-0 this year, beating every team without a struggle it has faced.
That includes arch-rival Hahnville, previous No. 4 Ehret and a Higgins
Destrehan still is No. 2 in the latest power ratings bonanza, but the Wildcats are finally cutting down on West Monroe's lead. With a win over East. St. John on Friday, I've got to imagine that Destrehan would overtake the top spot.
And then there's Brother Martin, a squad that quietly began the season with high aspirations. The Crusaders are following through, charging to a 5-0 start. Now Brother Martin is being rewarded with a No. 3
Week 6 in the season equaled Week 4 in pick 'em and apparently three weeks was enough for some of our pickers.
We somehow lost Tom Planchet, Chad Bower and Soccer Freak this past week. Hopefully we can get them back and hit the home stretch of the regular season.
As for who did pick, we welcomed back James Barreca. However, it was the WWL-TV sports department again finding its way to the top. Professor, however, is nipping at t
Destrehan is on a 20-game win streak, including winning all 15 in 2007. This year's team has shown no signs of letting up.
And those who rank teams nationally are beginning to take notice.
Maxpreps.com has the Wildcats as the country's No. 2 ranked team. Rivals.com, meanwhile, has Destrehan at No. 65. And USA Today has no Louisiana team ranked in its Top 25.
But the more surprising ranking this week comes from the West
So, tell me if you understand this: Destrehan goes 15-0 and beats Acadiana in the 2007 Class 5A.
Enter fall 2008 and lo and behold, Acadiana is No. 1 in the 5A poll. What do the Wildcats do? They go out and dismantle their first five opponents, including then-No. 4 Ehret.
The Destrehan defense is just plain good and the offense appears to have picked up where it left off a year ago. I don't get it. Destrehan should be No. 1. Th
