A GAME WITH HISTORY: Holy Cross, Jesuit renew rivalry

Barry Wilson played football at LSU. He played in a Sugar Bowl, in Tigers' games against Alabama, in LSU games against Ole Miss.

But there are three games Holy Cross' head coach will always remember, and they have nothing to do with college.

"We played Jesuit for city champ my junior year," said Wilson, a Holy Cross alumnus. "We had a great football team and they beat us 7-6. We should have beaten them. We only took one team to

Ehret over O.P. Walker 25-17, 15-25, 25-20, 25-8: Ashley Boudoin led Ehret to a non-district win Wednesday, recording a team-high five aces and 13 digs. Kalaina Price added 18 kills and Shaimyker Pickens had 26 assists, also for the Patriots.

WEEKLY PICKS: Sept. 28-29

OK, last week wasn't a good week for anyone. Well, I take that back. McDonogh 35, Hahnville and a bunch of other teams certainly enjoyed their weeks. They won.

Those who participate in the weekly pick 'em didn't do so well. And that certainly includes me. Prep Guru, a new friend of the blog, and Professor, also new, picked up wins this week, going a fantastic 7-3. Ron Held, still lead

NYT COVERS SOUTH PLAQUEMINES

I can't say enough how great a story this is. Jere Longman of the New York Times can write, and write well. He wrote a story this week about the South Plaquemines football team and what it went through recently with Tropical Depression 10 looming in the Gulf. It's a must read. Also, our own Mike Hoss is quoted high in the sto

NATIONAL RANKINGS (Sept. 25): Shaw gains, Curtis falls hard

The Louisiana Sports Writers Association might not give any love to Shaw in regards to moving ahead of Bastrop, but MaxPreps apparently is on the Eagles' bandwagon. The Westbank school jumped 48 spots this week to get into the top 30 nationally.

But Shaw didn't make the biggest jump. Heck, the biggest number I saw this week in regard to local schools actually was connected with a loss. Guess who?

Yep. Curtis. The Patriots play

LSWA RANKINGS: Sept. 25-30

You've got to feel bad for Shaw right now. Well, if you're a Rummel fan, maybe not. But the Eagles are playing hands down some of the best football in the metro area, if not the best football. The defense is as salty as ever, and the offense isn’t showing signs of letting up.

Yet, that does no good come poll time as long as Shaw stays in Class 4A with Bastrop, the defending state champions, the Eagles are going to find it hard to move

POWER RATINGS: Sept. 24

I'm getting the idea four weeks into the season that, if you're in Class 2A, and you're not currently in the top 35, you're going to have a really tough time working your way into the top 32 playoff spots.

For the second week in a row, movement in that class was the most limited. Average movement decreased this week across the board, though Class 1A had the fewest teams remain in the same position, with one (5A had 7, 4A had 6, 3A had

ST. AUGUSTINE, McDONOGH 35 GO NATIONAL

Playing your nemesis should be enough get the adrenaline flowing for any normal high school football player.

Add a nationally broadcast game on ESPNU to the mix, and the only question is how you, as a coach, contain that adrenaline.

That’s the case for two local programs both devastated by Hurricane Katrina two years ago. Tonight, at 7:30 p.m., neighborhood rivals McDonogh 35 and St. Augustine take to the field at Tad Gormley S

HAHNVILLE, O.P. WALKER PREPARE FOR SHOOTOUT

In a game that pits two of the areas top offenses against each other, it’ll be the best defense that guides either Hahnville or O.P. Walker to a win tonight at Behrman Stadium.

The Chargers (3-0) have scored 113 points this year. Hahnville (3-0) doesn’t lag far behind with 97. And their defenses have been even better, with O.P. Walker giving up only seven points to Hahnville’s six.

Something has to give. Hahnville head coach L

WEEKLY PICKS: Sept. 21-22

Ron Held, take a bow. You were the undisputed winner for week three of this Blogs (still unidentified, thank you very much) weekly pick ‘em. Ron went 9-1, improving his season record to 16-4 (he joined during week two of this amazing adventure).

Soccer Freak improved, as well, going 8-2 to up his season total to 14-6. You know, maybe if you weren’t a Salmen “apologist,” you would have gotten that game

NATIONAL RANKINGS: Sept. 17-23

How subjective are high school polls, let alone polls period? I'll tell you. River Ridge school John Curtis moved up in one national poll, while falling hard in another. And the thing is, Curtis is 3-0 on the year.

More interestingly, one national poll has only Curtis ranked, while the other one has two other Louisiana teams ranked ahead of the Patriots.

I'm not going to lie - At this point, I'm a little confused over the crit

LSWA FOOTBALL RANKINGS: Sept. 18

The polls are out. And, with all No. 1's in every classification winning last week, they have all retained their ranking. So, too, have all No. 2's. In fact, not much movement at all throughout the five classifications.

Locally, we find Curtis holding strong at No. 1 in Class 2A, Lutcher hanging in at No. 1 in 3A, with Shaw holding tight at No. 2 in 4A and Destrehan solidly No. 3 in 5A.

Noted area schools Ehret, Holy Cross and

WINNING WITH YOUNGSTERS

Talk with Lutcher head coach Tim Detillier and he'll tell you he didn't necessarily expect to be 3-0 with a team that lost 35 players from a year ago. Some were seniors and some decided not to return to the team.

Yet, the young and somewhat inexperienced Class 3A Bulldogs have followed a 20-6 opening weekend win over 5A Higgins with a 21-14 win over 5A St. Amant and a 30-14 win over 5A Thibodaux. >> Continue reading: WINNING WITH YOUNGSTERS

POWER RATINGS: Sept. 17

Ken Ramsey's power ratings heading into game week four are out. Interestingly, Class 2A saw the least volatility, showing how tough that division might be. In that classification, 10 teams stayed in the same place as the prior week, including the top three teams. Class 5A appears, at least right now, to be the easiest to make a move.

Average movement per classification:
Class 5A= 9.125
Class 4A= 7.632
Class 3A= 7.767<

WEEKLY PICKS: Sept. 14-15

It's that time again. Make your picks. Going once. Going twice. Sold! To Mr. Ron Held, winner of week 2's pick'em. He went 7-3, narrowly defeating Soccer Freak's 6-4 record. Week 1 winner Christopher Mire failed to email in, so he's stuck at 9-1 on the season.

As for me, I improved by two games, going 8-2 in the second week. I goofed on the Salmen and Jesuit wins. I'll try not to do that again, as Friend of the Blog Chris Finch, a prou

NATIONAL RANKINGS: Sept.10-16

In what has become a three-week trend, Louisiana continues to have only three teams rated in the MaxPreps.com national top 100 -- Bastrop, Curtis and Acadiana.

And in the USA Today top 25, Curtis remains the only team from the Pelican State. The Patriots are still No. 15 as they prepare to take on "Salmon." Well, at least that's how the

LSWA FOOTBALL RANKINGS: Sept. 11

There was no movement in classes 2A-5A this week at the top in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association polls. In 1A, Kentwood dropped a spot to No. 2 after losing 14-12 to Amite, which moved up in the receiving votes section of 3A.

Other than that, Independence fell four spots to No. 8 after 5A's Ehret drilled the Tigers 28-0. Independence's offense was anemic throughout the game, unable to move the ball at all.

OK, so I wasn't exactly stellar in my picks last week. Never fear, as the coaches like to say, it's a long season, and I'm taking it one week at a time. Mr. Mire scorched the field (me), going 9-1 for the week, missing only the Northshore-Salmen game. (more) ...

MAKING A FALCON STATEMENT

Ben Franklin lost to Country Day by more than a couple of touchdowns a year ago. So, you could say the Falcons were a smidge ready to get to the Cajuns this season.

And when the game finally happened, Franklin sent a notice to Country Day and the rest of the schools on its schedule − the Falcons aren’t the same team you’ve grown to pity. ...

WHAT I THINK I KNOW: Game Week 1

Number of the week: 13

That's how many true away teams won this weekend, coming out to roughly 45 percent. I've got to think that's abnormally high. Maybe it had something to do with it being the first week.
